Prof. Wing-Tak Wong
Chairman of Board of Directors, AiDLab
Deputy President and Provost of PolyU

With the ever-growing influence and importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in our lives and economy, the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Design (AiDLab) was established to look into the dynamics empowered by fusing AI and designs.  Funded under the InnoHK Research Clusters by the HKSAR Government by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the AiDLab serves as an intelligent and adaptive platform that enables designers to thrive in their quest for innovative solutions to meet society's challenges through collaborative research on an interdisciplinary basis for need-addressing technology.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) takes pride in this synergistic collaboration with the prestigious Royal College of Arts.  Together, we join forces to translate our vibrant research into impactful design-related technology driven by creativity across multiple disciplines.  I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincerest thanks for the tremendous efforts of all contributors in the establishment of AiDLab and look forward to the game-changing advances triggered by AiDLab in the near future.

Prof. Calvin Wong
Chief Executive Officer of AiDLab
Cheng Yik Hung Professor in Fashion of PolyU

AiDLab is unique in that it bridges the scientific and aesthetic domains. Our mission is to develop the region’s first and leading research platform to facilitate and promote the integration of AI into the design of products and services.

We aim to leverage Hong Kong’s role as a leading creative hub by connecting local and international research in AI and design. Sharing common values, we are very excited to welcome Prof. Naren BARFIELD, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost of the Royal College of Art, and his team to join us and commence our journey of discovery.

AiDLab, a 10,000 square feet purpose-built space located at The Hong Kong Science Park, houses four laboratories with state-of-the-art research facilities in design and big data analytics. We have more than 65 researchers and the space provides an ideal environment for a rapidly expanding team to conduct cross-disciplinary research under three thematic programmes. They include “Ergonomic and Inclusive Design”, which deploys AI technologies to develop innovative body measurement and posture correction solutions to advance fashion design and wearables that promote well-being; “Innovation in Product and Service Design”, which focuses on participative, user-centred design research employing co-design methodologies to achieve continuous and iterative evolution; and “Intelligent Fashion Design and Quality Control”, which explores algorithmic design that integrates machine intelligence and human knowledge to advance design, quality control and manufacturing processes in the fashion and textiles industries.

I would like to offer my heartfelt gratitude to our staff and stakeholders who have supported us and contributed selflessly and generously to the establishment of AiDLab. We are set to make significant contributions to the industry and society, and ready to build a more human-centred and sustainable future.
